American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course

Course Name and Dates:
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course (Blended Learning - Waterfront not included)
  • Lifeguarding candidates must be at least 15 years old by the completion of the course and pass a prerequisite swim test on the first day of the class at the Lincoln Hancock Community School Pool.
  • The next Lifeguarding Course will be held in April.
  • Participants are required to attend ALL Classes and complete ALL Blended Learning modules.
  • Upon successful completion of the course, an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certificate and First Aid Skills Certificate will be issued.

Registration Information:
  • Registration for the course is limited and can be done online at QuincyRec.com
  • The cost of the program is $325.00*, which includes all books, supplies, and Red Cross fees.
  • *$225.00 for those with Pool Membership. Fee will be adjusted at checkout for Pool Members.
  • *FREE for Quincy Recreation Aquatics applicants. Fee will be adjusted with the applicant Promo Code.

Prerequisite Swim Test Information:
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 min 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive feet first or head first to a depth of 12 feet to retrieve a 10 lb. object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping it at the surface of the water. Candidates should not swim under water. Exit the pool without using a ladder or steps.

General Information:
In this course, participants will learn about the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard, as well as, how to carry these duties out in a professional manner. Participants will learn a number of life guarding techniques, such as, surveillance techniques, how to rescue distressed swimmers, active drowning victims, passive drowning victims, and suspected spinal injury victims using rescue equipment.

These practices require strenuous activity. If a participant has a medical condition or disability that may prevent them from taking part in the practice sessions, or have questions at all about their ability to participate fully in the Lifeguard Training Course, they should discuss it with the appropriate person at the local Red Cross Chapter before the start of the course.

Certifications:
Upon successful completion of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course, participants will receive an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, which includes First Aid Skills and is valid for 2 years. Participants will also receive a CPR for Professional Rescuer certificate which is valid for 2 years.
